Concon Goes to Long Beach Comic Con
Comic Book artists, retailers, pop culture personalities and a massive number of cosplayers gathered at the Long Beach Convention Center for the 8th Annual Long Beach Comic Convention last weekend, in celebration of all things creative and geeky.
The Concon Team was on hand both Saturday and Sunday, asking cosplayers: "What is the one essential you need to bring with you to every Convention?" See a compilation of our favorites responses below.
The main draw this weekend was the cast of popular Sci-Fi Western show Firefly, named after the iconic spaceship flown by Captain Malcolm Reynolds, his crew and two stowaways, as they escape a corrupt government faction. The cast comprised of Nathan Fillion, Adam Baldwin, Summer Glau, Sean Maher and Jewel Staite reminisced about their initial auditions for the show, on-set pranks, and their feelings regarding the premature cancellation of the TV show, which Fillion admitted was a bittersweet moment.
“We are very much, as a cast, in the same position as you are. We’re tied to things emotionally as well […] they don’t give you a ring to tell you ‘Here’s why.’ They don’t shape it up for you. Sometimes it’s a little bit of heartbreak, and no true […] closure.”
Fillion also shared with the fans a hypothetical scene that was never filmed, which had been described to him by the show’s creator, Joss Whedon. The scene hinted at the fate of Captain Reynolds aboard a derelict Firefly in an abandoned star system referred to as the Junkyard.
“Joss once described an opening scene to me where we are looking at a planet with a ring around it and as we come in close, we see the ring is actually rocks and pieces of ships and old derelicts. It’s a junk ring. It’s the Junkyards — we mentioned it in ‘Firefly’ one time. […] and as we get closer we see Serenity floating lifeless and these little people getting on and coming through it. And as they get into the airlock and they close it, they come and there’s Malcolm Reynolds, bleeding and cut, strapped down with giant guns and not looking great […] and he says, ‘Get off my ship.'”
In addition to joining the Firefly cast, Fillion, fellow actor Nolan North and producer PJ Haarsma presented the panel for webseries Con Man, created and written by Alan Tudyk (also a former Firefly cast member). Though Tudyk himself wasn’t physically at the panel, Fillion, North, and Haarsma showcased a trailer featuring an animated Tudyk and Fillion in order to promote Con Man: The Game, a companion mobile app, available for iOS and Android devices (http://conmantheseries.com/game/). We had a chat with PJ and his crew at the Con Man booth, and experienced first-hand how truly addictive the game is.
